SAI Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What exactly is this SAI thing I keep hearing about?A: Sigma Alpha Iota (pronounced ee-O-tuh) is a professional music fraternity for women. It's purposes are to foster interest in music and to promote social contact among persons sharing an intrest in music. SAI is inovolved in many philanthropic activities and sponsor many musicales nationwide. SAI sisters share strong bonds with each other for life.Q: Is SAI a sorority?A: No! Sigma Alpha Iota is a professional fraternity. It's purpose is different from that of sororities and other honors organizations. SAI members may also become a member of a general sorority, Greek honors organization, and professional non-music fraternities or sororities.Q: Why is SAI called a fraternity and not a sorority?A: In the beginning SAI WAS called a sorority. In 1926, the word "fraternity" replaced "sorority", which comes from the abstract feminine Latin noun fraternitas, and refers to both men and women. All Greek music organizations are called fraternities today.Q: Is MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION easy?A: No, it is not. Membership education is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun! As hard as it may seem, remember that thousands have done it before you and thousands will do it after you. Also remember that you are not alone! You have sisters and M.I.T. sisters who will do anything possible to see you initiated and join the proud ranks of SAI.Q: What kind of things do Members In Training do?A: M.I.T. activities vary from chapter to chapter. Some general things they do is meet the sisters, learn SAI history, do a fundraiser, play in a M.I.T. recital, do some projects, and basically learn what it is to be an SAI. For more information, fill out our MEMBERSHIP FORM, or ask any sister.Q: How long does The MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION PROGRAM last?A: The whole semester! It seems like forever, but is really worth the wait when initiation time comes. Initiation dates vary from chapter to chapter.Q: I hear that sororities and fraternities haze. Does SAI haze?A: Absolutely not! As members we are sworn to respect the dignity of all persons. It is written in our basic expectations that we will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being. We are VERY serious about enforcing this rule. All M.I.T's are welcome to leave if they, at any time, feel uncomfortable.Q: Is SA I a service Organization?A:Absolutely NOT. We are an organization that demands professionalism amoungst women musicians. If we choose to help out or donate our time to do community service then it is our choice. We are not obligated to serve anyone, or any thing.Q: Will you tell me some of your secrets?A: LOL! Nope! Hence the word, "secret".Q: How do I join?A: Through your college chapter! Look for posters advertising a SAI rush during the first couple of weeks of the semester. During Rush, all the requirements will be explained in greater detail. There are certain national and chapter requirements to become a member. If you qualify for membership, you will be inducted at the end of rush and you will be a proud new pledge!Q: How do I qualify for membership? All M.I.T. must have the Following:1. A 2.5 GPA, (some chapters may require a higher G.P.A) 2. A sincere interest in music 3. One MUSIC credit 4. Pay financial obligations 5. Pass the national comprehensive exam Q: What is "Rush" anyway?A: Rush is very different from chapter to chapter. The main goal of rush is for the prospective M.I.T.'s and sisters to get to know each other. Rush activities vary from casual gatherings to more formal gatherings. This is the period of time when you decide whether you want to pledge or not. "Rush" is open to all women of music. If you're not sure whether you want to pledge or not, we strongly encourage you to come check out what it is we do.
