| My earliest memories of dogs are of a pedigree sable rough collie bitch called, what else, but Lassie who grew up with our family in the South West of Western Australia, and the tradition of a dog as a family pet continued into my late teens. At the age of 21, I was transferred with my work to Sydney [NSW], and so began my involvement with pedigree show dogs through my friend Peeta Alford, who had established SABU Kennels in 1973 with a litter of Afghan Hounds. Long Coat Chihuahuas were added in the late 70s and included the UK import TWINLEY CORN BUNTING, from the world renowned kennels of Pauline Block. During our involvement with the breed, we produced 3 Australian Champions, Singapore Champion SABU CAMELOT, 1 All Breeds Best In Show Winner and the Specialty Best In Show winner, Australian Champion SABU TAMARIND. I became involved with English Springer Spaniels in 1981, with the 9 month old liver & white dog BRIARKNOLL ROYAL OAK, who went on the become an Australian Champion and multi Best In Show winner, and one of Western Australias top winning dogs, including West Australian English Springer Spaniel of the Year in 1986 and 1987. He has the distinction of being the only Springer Spaniel to be awarded Best Exhibit In Show at the prestigious PEDIGREE PAL Western Classic Dog Show, receiving this honour at the 7th Classic in 1985 under Mrs Pamela Cross-Stern of the UK. (Read about it in "Pick of 1000") In 1982, with our troupe of dogs, we headed west to re-establish SABU Kennels in Perth, Western Australia. Before leaving, we were introduced to another breed, the Lowchen, in the cream/silver male HANROVIA RHUM BHALL [known as Booma], who also quickly gained his Australian Championship, amassing some 20 Best Exhibit In Group awards in his short, yet influential career. Over this time, I have owned, bred or handled 56 Champions in several breeds. In the TOY Group, I have owned, shown or bred 26 Champion Lowchens, including Australian Champion SABU BOOMA ARANG, who was the first Lowchen to win an All Breeds Best Exhibit In Show award at a Championship Show in Australia. Australian Grand Champion SABU DEL AMITRI, a multi Best Exhibit In Show winner at All Breeds & Toy Specialty Championship Shows, and Western Australian Dog of the Year 1992 [National Dog Competition], and the first recognized Grand Champion in the breed in Australia. Dels multi Best Exhibit In Show winning son Australian & South African Champion SABU STERLING AT CHIANGTE, the first of his breed to be registered and shown on the African Continent. Sterling is a BIS winner on both Continents, PEDIGREE PAL Parade Toy of the Year [WA] 1994, Best Exhibit In Group winner at the PEDIGREE PAL Western Classic Dog Show 1995, and Western Province Top Dog [Sth Africa] 1996, 1997 and 1998. Sterling has been instrumental in establishing the Lowchen breed on the African Continent, with many of his offspring continuing to excel in the showring, and a young son about to excite the showrings in Scandinavia. Dels other multi Best Exhibit In Group winning son Australian Champion SABU CADBURY, whose record includes Best Exhibit In Show at the Easter 1994 Lowchen Championship Show, and Runner-Up to Best Exhibit In Show at the November 1995 Lowchen Championship Show, Best Exhibit In Show at the WA Toy Dog Specialist Clubs Championship Shows in April 1995 & October 1995. Dels grandson Australian, Mexican, American, International & World Champion SABU COLOUR IN SEPIA, a multiple Best Exhibit In Group winner and All Breeds Best Exhibit In Show winner at 10 months of age, who gained his first title at 14 months of age. Choci was also the winner of the Americana Junior and World Junior titles in Mexico 1999, and is the first Australian bred International Champion in the breed. In the GUNDOG Group, I have titled 14 English Springer Spaniels, including Australian Champion JIMETTA TOPPENCE, multi Best In Show and Runner-Up Best in Show [All Breeds] and WA ESS of the Year 1985, and his Best In Group winning son Australian Champion CAIRPARAVEL KING KASPIAN, awarded WA ESS of the Year 1991, '92, '93, and '94. [with 4 others achieving Best In Group awards.] I have enjoyed the distinction of owning Western Australia's English Springer Spaniel of the Year in 1985, '86, '87, 1990, '91, '92, '93, and 1994. I have also owned and bred Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and shown three Chessies to their Championships, including the Australian Champion BRIARKNOLL EASTERN STAR, Australian Champion BRIARKNOLL EASTWICK and their Best In Group winning mother Australian Champion BRIARKNOLL AZURITE. I have also handled a Cocker Spaniel and a Gordon Setter to their Australian Championship titles. In the HOUND Group, I have owned and shown Afghan Hounds and currently own, show and breed whippets. SABU IMAGINATION was the winner of RCC and Runner-Up to Best of Breed, as well as Minor Puppy in Group at the PEDIGREE Pal Western Classic 1999, under breed specialist Mrs Joan Frailey of the United States of America. Included are the three All Breeds Best In Show winning bitches Australian Champion HARROWAY SLIPSTREAM, Australian Champion HARROWAY INFATUATION, and Australian Champion HARROWAY RUMBA, bred by my friend and mentor Ms Pam Campbell. RUMBA has the distinction of having been awarded Best Exhibit In Group under whippet specialist Mrs Marilyn Hoy of NSW, and then Runner-Up to Best Exhibit in Show under whippet specialist Mrs Jean Hargreaves of Tasmania. In the WORKING DOG GROUP, I have handled 2 Bearded Collies to their Australian Championship titles. In the UTILITY Group, I have owned & shown St Bernards, including the multi Best In Group winning dog Australian Champion D'Mowbray Star Royal, as well as titling two others. In the NON SPORTING Group, I have owned, bred and shown Lhasa Apsos, and have shown and titled 6 Standard Poodles, including Australian Champion SYLVENUS NATASHA [All Breeds Best in Group winner], Australian Champion SYLVENUS BREAK THE SPELL [All Breeds Best in Group winner], Australian Champion SYLVENUS CALL ME STEVEE [All Breeds Best In Show winner], Australian Champion SYLVENUS IZ ONU, Australian Champion LITZ REMINGTON [All Breeds Best In Show winner], and Australian Champion KIBRAN JUDGEMENT DAY [multi All Breeds Best in Show winner and awarded Runner-Up to Best Exhibit in Show at the 1995 Royal Perth Show], owned by Bob & Joan Jensen of Sylvenus Kennels.SABU Champions" section. ~Steve Warry~ Back to Top |
