German SS Tanker
This is a Francois Verlinden kit. I chose this one because of the camouflage pattern. This came with a ceramic base and two 88mm rounds. Personally, if you get a chance to look at the box art, I dont like how Verlinden painted it. It shows the figure with a stupid looking smile! I bought this specifically for my painting class with Shepard Paine where I sat at the very front row.

This is my very first 1/6th scale painting project and because I was sitting at the very front, Shep used my figure to demo the shading technique! So, the face painting & shades was painted by Shep himself! I was pretty brave then, I painted the camo pattern without doing any research. I dont think the Germans even made this uniform and camo pattern combination.

I didnt like the ceramic base, so I created one using Sculpey. Unfortunately, I never got to finish the base. Though it looked good, I decided to shelf it after noticing my skins allergic reaction to Sculpey. In the pictures you will see the figure in the wood base that I use to hold the figure as I paint them.
Modern British Trooper
Imperial Gallery manufactured this resin kit. At the time, Francois Verlinden was the only ticket to get a modern British trooper with his release of the Desert Rat. Imperial Gallery seemed to have come out of nowhere with their impressive line of British subjects from Falklands to the current period. I liked this one because I will be painting the British DPM camo. This figure also features the SA80.

Assembly itself was easy. The modifications I made involved: adding a lot of putty between the rear pouches and the figures rear end (theres a lot of space!); adding texture to under the boots and replacing the barrel of the SA80 with a metal part.

Using my actual uniform as reference, I tried to paint in the camo patterns as much as I can. Pretty unique result all in all. I like the animated pose. Note how small the contact is between the boots and the sloped base.
British Desert Rat - Gulf War 1991
Illustrated to the right is Ron Volstad's rendering of a British Trooper serving in the 1991 Gulf War (taken from Osprey Elite Series Publication Number 45, "Armies Of The Gulf War". Used with Ron Volstad's permission). I used this illustration plus some actual uniforms I bought as a reference for painting the figure below.

Of interest in the illustration is the SA80 which the trooper is carrying and the webbing. The rifle is of "bullpup" design where the trigger is in front of the magazine. The webbing is an Arktis chest pouch rig fashioned after the Vietcong chest rigs.

Flightpath manufactured this kit. It comprised of five pieces. Four made of resin and one white metal. The detail is very impressive. I especially like how the "shemagh" or scarf was captured, tassels and all. The figure here is depicted using the PLCE Webbing instead of the chest rig as illustrated above.

I built the figure from stock without any modifications. The paints used are a combination of enamel and oil. I bought an actual shemagh and used it as a reference for painting.

The detail of the webbing was faithfully captured. On my examining of the real webbing, I have noted that the British use U.S. entrenching tool. I tried to replicate this in my figure by using a similar shade for the tool.

I entered this piece in the 1999 SCAHMS with the 1/72nd Bridge diorama. This largely got ignored.

I got exposed to this scale after attending Shepard Paine's painting class. My painting have improved a lot after that class. If you think they're not much, you should see my earlier attempts!
