Fragments from a Life

Our lives are punctuated by small significant moments of transformation often;emphasized with ritual offerings of food, such as the cakes cut at weddings, birthdays and to mark other specific days. The invitation to share a meal can be a potent gesture of friendship and we take delight in such small celebrations;Like a cinematic series of short scenes the accumulation of small, sometimes infinitesimal details build up a portrait of a life in a collage of fragmented memories. However, the things recalled may be mundane and unexpected while the grand important scene itself is forgotten.;
With these paintings I continue to explore familiar domestic situations which hint at private personal dramas:;While adults focus on preparing for a party a child continues to inhabit his parallel universe of the imagination.;
Vesta, goddess of the hearth, prepares a glistening meal with a chaotic array of implements and ingredients; the triumph of the alchemist transforming raw materials into gold. At the centre of the celebratory offerings of food the fruit, with hints of decay and renewal, suggests the transitory nature of these events.;Objects and place lose commonplace banality with the drama of the moment as In her cluttered bedroom the serious young student puts aside her book to be transported into a lover's paradise.
