October on Fire Island

This boardwalk is a mile trail through some of the foliage that grows on the island.  The trees will grow only to the height of the dunes.  The dunes protect them from the salt water.  The island is all sand, so the plants growing here like sandy soil.
This tree was right along the boardwalk.  All the pine cones are still on the tree, but there are no needles.  Several people said it almost looks like they were glued for some artist effect.

The island is home to many deer and you can see where the deer have feasted on the plants and trees.

There is a lot of growth along side the boardwalk.  The bay berries were gone.  I saw a lot of red berries, cat tails and plumes.  Poison Ivy likes sandy soil.  You can see it growing off the trail.

 

I could not figure out what type of plant this was.  It was just too interesting not to snap a picture.
