| Tabling is an everyday part of being a JCSC Fellow. Tabling is the most effective way to reach the everyday masses of Rutgers University. It brings Jewish life to campus and does not require any commitment from the students. It is important to remember that tabling is its own program so it must be engaging, eye-catching and fun!! You must go prepared with all necessary materials and proper signage so that passerbys understand what the purpose of the tables is. Also, a tabling program cannot require a lot of time or energy from the students because they are usually in a rush. However, it is a great way to raise awareness about the holidays or upcoming events. I met many students through tabling, many Jewish, many not. I became a regular face in the student centers. I recognized many students and they recognized me as the Jewish presence on campus. It was then that I felt I was reaching the most number of students who were not normally aware of Jewish life on campus. A few tabling tips... **Food is a great thing to have around your table. It is important to note that only packaged foods can be distributed. All foods must be individually wrapped and must be Kosher. **Stand in front of the table or to the side of the table and never sit down. Don't let the height difference or table barrier interfere with you connecting to the students. Make yourself accessible and approachable. Tabling requires a lot of energy because you have to stay positive and enthusiastic at all times. Realize that once you've hit your limit, if you are too exhausted or have lost your energy, it is time to leave or take a break. **It is SO much easier to table with other people, not alone. You feel more comfortable in larger numbers and it also helps to pass the time more quickly. I would encourage you to plan your table programs with students and encourage them to help out!! **I always had something to give to the students. Even if they don't stop by the table, they will take a small info sheet on the holidays as they pass by. Students love freebies!!! Food and giveaways are KEY. |
