Valentine's Day/Tu B'Av
On Valentine's Day, I decided to table outside of Hillel and hand out Hershey kisses to the students passing by on their way to class.  However, I wanted to add Jewish content, so I compared Valentine's Day to the Jewish holiday, Tu B'Av.  While the students passing by thought the idea was good, a few students on the HLC objected to promoting a holiday that is not Jewish.  However, the job of the JCSC is to relate to the students "where they're at" and on Valentine's Day, ALL students were celebrating.  This was a very simple tabling program.   On the front side of the info sheet, I wrote "Happy Valentine's Day!  Have a Kiss From Hillel!"  On the other side, I wrote:

A Jewish Valentines Day??

Tu BAv
A Day of Love

There are no days as festive to Israel as those ofthe fifteenth of Av.  The daughters of Israel used to dress in white and go out to the fields to dance and young men would follow after them.  (Taanit 4:8)  Tu Bav is celebrated as a day of courting, in which young women took the lead.  This year Tu Bav falls on July 24th.  Celebrate Valentines Day all over again this July!!  And remember your kiss from Hillel.
