I
started surf kayaking about eight years ago in the spring of 1993. I
competed occasionally and went out whenever I could. The ocean gave my
river kayaking a whole new style, actually working with the waves and
doing similar moves in a kayak as on a surf board.
In
1997, at age 16, I went to the world surf kayak championships in
northern Scotland; with the combination of my river knowledge and my
surf knowledge continuing to grow I was ready to test it on the world
scene. I ended up second in the junior division and the first
ever-freestyle event at the worlds I ended up becoming world champion
for the men.
