ITS or in full "Intelligent Transport Systems" is the application of telecommunications and information processing technology to the operation and management of transport infrastructure whether
they be road, railway, sea or air. It is insightful to realise that the field was originally called Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) in North America. In Europe was known as Road Transport Informatics (RTI) or
Advanced Transport Telematics (ATT). The primacy of the automobile in the orginal conceptions, should alert caring people to question the ulitimate agender of many ITS projects.
For a sample of all the weird and wounderful ideas just check out these Intelligent Transport Systems links. There are however few good books
that offer a glimmer of hope that ITS can be used a tool to advance the goal of sustainable transport for a greener society.
