Running Swift Kennel Sled Dogs
Training Log 2
December 24th, 2002
Today we did a 14 mile run, using the same loop from the woodcutter's road, only we went around the hayfields to add 2 more miles to the run. I concentrated on some heavy weight training, which is considerable with an atv that weighs about 600 lbs. But the 12 dog team handled it easily, and the run was very nice. I did have a problem with Canyon, a 2 year old male dog that we got last season. At about 8 miles, he started slacking...then eventually started necklining. After stopping several times to check his feet, check for injuries, etc, I finally loaded him onto the atv. The rest of the team continued on as Canyon struggled to see the dogs running in front of him. After about 1-2 miles of this, Canyon got so wiggly that I finally decided to put him back in the team. I'll be darned if that dog didn't pull like a demon the rest of the way home! So it looks like we'll have to work with him to get him past his little mental block. The dogs ran wonderfully and really deserved their treats tonight!

During the run, the snow started falling as the sun went down, everything was glistening and white. What a joy it is to be running on these awesome trails with a great team of my best friends.

Merry Christmas All!! May your trails be fast, your dogs fleet of foot and your hearts filled with love!
