Running Swift Kennel Sled Dogs
Training Log 1
December 22nd, 2002
We've been training since September, but I've been so busy with school & whatnot, that I've just now been able to start this website. We've had a pretty weird training season this year. We bought our first home just this summer, so we had to get used to some new training trails that we soon discovered are pretty muddy until freezeup. We were stuck at 4-8 mile runs until the temps finally got cool enough to solidify the trails. Then, we got a nice snowfall in October, only to have it melt away and leave behind some very nasty ice. Several occasions of freezing rain along with varying temperatures made for some dangerous, icy trails. We still continued to train, however we took it slow and were only at about 13 mile runs by the beginning of December. Then another rash of freezing rain pretty much brought training to a halt all over for about 2 weeks, as the trails were so icy dogs were getting injured and atvs were almost getting flipped. Then, around the 15th or so, we got a little snow and some cold temps, which helped the trails enough to get the dogs back out again.

This run went pretty well. We ran along the Chena Hotsprings Road from our house out to 21 mile...to the woodcutter's road, then down to the winter trail. We normally run left out of our lot, but "Death Hill" (as we've taken to call it with all the ice) has been too dangerous. By going right out of the lot, we are able to do a large loop instead of out and backs. The run went well, with the dogs doing some weight training. It was a lovely run...and all the dogs did well, although Casper & Patsy were a bit tired, as they hadn't run with the team for a little while...but they continued throughout the whole run. What little troopers!! Looking forward to that snow the weatherman is predicting by Christmas!
