Running Swift Kennel Sled Dogs
Training Log 3
December 26th, 2002
Talked to Aliy and decided it was time to take the dogs on some hill training. So, with a 12 dog team, we went up and over Jenny M Hill today. The trails were beautiful with the additional 5 inches of snow we got over Christmas day. It started snowing on Christmas morning, and is still going today. Jenny M Hill was a great run for the dogs...they charged straight up with no hesitation. Little Curry dog is really turning out to be a great leader up there with Dutchess. Those two are definitely a good pair. Stopped halfway up to clean feet...only a couple had developed some snow accumulation..but nothing to be worried about. I'm really amazed at the feet on those pointer crosses...they never seem to have problems! Nice and compact without the massive amounts of hair some of the Alaskans have.

We did a head on pass, even though Curry needs to work on that area, as she balks when the other team goes by. Dutchess just plows on past, so I'm sure Curry will pick it up before too long. We continued the run with no problems. I stopped to check feet again, but all were very good, so we headed for home. That run was an 18 miler, but I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't looked at the odometer on the atv. The team came in strong at their regular pace, with not a single slack tug to be seen. These dogs never cease to amaze me! They get the next 2 days off, then it'll be up the hill again. Can't wait to see how they do on the next run! The trails are so nice, I think we'll do a 14 dog team and see how they go. If we can only get some more snow, I'll be able to pull the sled out and jump the distance. I'm itching to see how this team does on a run to Angel Creek and back. Keep doing those snow dances!!
