Genealogy

This page is meant to eventually be, or link to, a file which has all the names from our Family Tree. At present we have over 1700 names, mostly from Germany..................more below....

The most common names on my father's side are Runkel, Lücker, Henn, Abresch, Reinhard, Lehnhard and Herzog. They all came from the Rheinland in and around the villages of Rengsdorf and Niederbieber....

Reinhard Dehler and Margot Paas The most common names on my mother's side are Piltz, Janssen, Spindler, Hofmann, Albers and Dehler. They originated in eastern Germany and Bavaria.... The picture shows Reinhard Dehler with his second wife, Margot Paas. "Opa" Dehler was the one who did some of the original research of our ancestry back in the 1930's.

There are many interesting tales dealing with our ancestry. Some examples are great grandchildren of siblings who eventually married each other, a possible connection to Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, a knight who lost his lands, castle and life in the 30 years war, various members of the town council in the medieval city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and more. One of my favorites is my great great grandfather Julius Spindler who left Germany to seek his fortune in the U.S. At age 19 he enlisted and fought in a few battles in the Civil War, before returning to Germany. A few years later he applied for a pension from the U.S. government, which he received until his death in 1936 at age 96.

Ernst Piltz and family My mother's side of the family also includes Ernst Piltz, a professor at the University in Jena who also authored at least two books that we know of. He is shown here with his wife, Elsa Hofmann and their daughter, Eva, who was born in 1900.

In addition, the most famous person in our tree, the artist Lucas Cranach is also represented. All of the names can be found in the home page of my cousin, Michael Dehler. To follow the link to Michael's home page and our tree, click on the link below:

There is a second page which has more pictures of my family dating from 1869 to 1960. These include some family shots and also give a good idea how clothing styles and photography have changed in the past 100 years.
