Pictures of my
Ancestors
Here is a second page of pictures which
cover my family's history. These pictures range from pre-WW1
family shots to individual portraits from the late 1800's, to
more recent photographs. The thing that I enjoyed about
compiling these pictures was not only my family history
connections, but also the obvious changes in styles of dress
during the period represented. Much of our family research
has been concentrated on my mother's ancestry, and the
surnames Spindler, Dehler, Piltz and Hofmann. Therefore most
of the pictures which are shown here represent this branch of
my family tree, although, I will attempt to include my Runkel
and Henn side as well.
This is a picture of the Henn family, my
paternal grandmother's family. My grandmother, Alwine Henn
(seated on the far right) is shown along with her 10 brothers
and sisters. Her parents, Friedrich and Louise Henn are in
the center. The picture is from 1918.
These are the 5 Dehler brothers, one of
which is my grandfather Reinhard Wilhelm Dehler, who compiled much of the genealogical work from
his grandfather, on which we have based our
research. This picture was taken about 1909.
Karl Wilhelm Heinrich Dehler married
Johanna von Spindler, and this couple sired the five boys
shown earlier around the turn of the century. This picture
dates from about 1885.
This is a bust of Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne
who we may be related to. The lineage can be traced by following
the Charlemagne link.
This is Emmy Janssen. She was born in
Adelaide, South Australia as the daughter of the German
ambassador to South Australia. The family left Australia in
the late 1850's, sailing back to Bremen because Emmy's father
could not stand the extreme temperatures. Enroute, Emmy's
younger brother, who had been born in Sydney, passed away.
This picture of Emmy dates from about 1869.
Shown at the right is Friedel Runkel and his
younger brother, Rudi, who is my father. The picture was taken
about 1931.
This is a picture of my mother, Edelgard Dehler, in the center flanked by her
two brothers Ernie, on the left, and Henry on the right. The
picture was taken at the family home in Saalfeld in 1929.
This is Hilde Piltz, my maternal
grandmother and her first husband Reinhard Dehler while they
were first dating in 1915.
The photograph above dates from 1960, and shows my
immediate family at Grandparents Dehler's home in Lake
Forest, IL just north of Chicago. Included are my cousins
Christine, age a few months, and Michael, age 3, as well as
my sister Barbara (with the ball) at age 4, and me.
This picture shows my great grandfather Ernst Piltz, who lived in
Jena, in the German state of Thüringen. He authored a number
of books about Jena and the area where he lived as well as
working as a natural history professor at the University of
Jena.
These last images are Johann Heinrich
Dehler and his wife Elizabeth von Berg. He was co-owner with
his brothers of the wire mesh factory known as "Brothers
Dehler" in Saalfeld, Thüringen. These pictures date
from about 1830.
