"The Media"

by RumpleTeazer

First off, let me just say, I totally believe in Free Speech and I'm very thankful to live in a country that would allow me to say the things I'm about to say. However, I do believe there should be a limit as to what is allowed to be shown on TV at times like these. Or Any time for that matter.

I don't think "The Media" should be permitted to show anything concerning our nation's state of being during times of war. Do we forget that these programs are going out all over the world? I can just imagine what the terrorist are thinking as they watch us running around like frightened children because of their actions. If we are to present a strong home front, (whether we feel strong or not) we must start with our television programming, and continue all the way down to our local newspapers.

If there is a need for us to be aware of a situation, then the Government should lay out the facts and precautions in a special edition newspaper, to be delivered to every home in America. This would cut down considerably on all the rumors flying around on our television sets. I believe what "The Media" is doing is equivalent to walking into a room full of people with a loaded semi-automatic gun and shouting "Yahoo!", only on a nationwide scale. We, as a nation, not only allow this type of behavior, we appear to be thriving on it. "The Media" has been feeding off our need for sensationalism, even while it's creating it. All under the protection of the First Amendment.

Now, history shows us that there are those who will "mimic" what they see on TV, and where we cannot, or by all means should not, censor what is shown in regular television programs, we can and should censor what is to be shown in "The News". There is a thin line between entertainment and reality, where there should be a gaping hole. It is for this reason that I don't think "The News" should contain anything at all about entertainment, including the latest TV shows, movies, which Celebes went to jail for DUI, or any other such nonsense that would be better suited to shows more tailored for it. That's why we have Entertainment Tonight and National Enquirer. (Which, by the way, are another pet peeve of mine).

I also don't think "The News" should contain anything personal about anyone. We all have our problems and our "closet skeletons". We all have our triumphs and revelations. These should be personal, to be shared with family and friends around the diner table perhaps, not aired on television for thousands to judge. (Even if you are foolish enough to think that you will be shown in a "fair" and "unbiased" way).

Which brings me to my next point, court cases in "The News". Not only do I see this as an irresponsible trend, it's becoming down right dangerous. You only have to look at the recent riots in Cincinnati to understand this. Let's face it people, if you're not a witness or a jury member, it's not your business to judge, (although "The News" would have you believe otherwise). We have worked long and hard to establish a justice system that the majority can agree on, I say we let them do their job without fear of retribution from a poorly informed public. If there becomes a time when there is a need for an uprising for an injustice done, there are other ways to communicate this need. Revolutions, my friends, are by no means unknown to us.

In conclusion, I plead to my fellow Americans, stop being "The Media's" lapdog! Go out and talk to your neighbors. Have town meetings. Become a community and not just scattered cells within a given area. That is what our Great Country was built on! Above all else, use common sense when dealing with tragedy and fear, don't advertise your weaknesses.

We Are a Strong Nation and United, we Can Stand.

God Bless America!
