Have you wondered about your coffee mug? About why we have such a strong attachment to that little (or in my case, big) piece of ceramic? Could it be because it delivers that vital drug- caffeine- to us on a regular basis? Or is it that we spend so much time staring at them? I would bet that most of us serious coffee drinkers look at our mugs more than we do our significant others and we definitely take more time picking out "just the right one." There's not much of a chance of walking into a store and having a coffee mug wink at you, trying to get you to take it home. It's a totally one sided relationship. You choose just the one you want and it doesn't say no. You can snuff your nose at all the others without feeling the least bit guilty. It's a love affair that you can be completely secure in because at night, you know exactly where your coffee mug is.
Of course, picking out the perfect mug isn't easy. You have to find one that reflects your personality, or at least the personality you would like to have. It has to be the right size, the right shape and the right look. The sentiment or logo has to tell the world exactly how you view the world or yourself. It's a way of expressing yourself, a way of telling others a little something about yourself without ever having to open your mouth. Ever notice how we judge others by what their coffee mugs say? And lets not even go into coffee mug envy. How, within seconds, the most honest coffee drinker can be reduced to thievery. All for the sake of a Java worthy mug.
You see them at the office, you see them at home, you see them on TV, you hear people drinking out of them on the phone. They're a part of our lives, an indestructible force. They feed us their drug, a never ending source. You can enjoy them any way you like. They're deep within us, our impenetrable psych, so choose your favorite, and make sure it's your best. Enjoy what you have, and forget the rest.
