| Taking a stand |

| As time passed, the Aristocrats continued to treat Jennifer horribly-tying her up, getting her clothes all dirty, and even hurting her. If this was Wendy's plan, it was working, for the two were as close as ever, still using letters to convey their deepest thoughts to eachother. But Jen was still very unhappy, as all the other orphans excluded her and taunted her, and even the adults did not like her-thinking her filthy and unruly because of things the Aristocrats had done to her. |

| Jennifer's luck seemed to take a turn when she discovered a puppy in an shed near the orphanage. She named him Brown, and the two quickly became inseperable. This made Wendy extremely jealous, so she took a rabbit named Sir Peter as a pet in order to try and make Jennifer feel the same and possibly ease her lonliness. But the rabbit made a mess, and the Aristocrats made her give him up to be hung(though it is possible the Headmaster made her give him up and he was not harmed) and made things even harder on Jennifer. But with Brown by her side, Jen pulled through and slowly ascended to a new rank-Irritating,-above Amanda, who was pushed down to Miserable. |

Finally, Wendy made her last Rule of Rose, saying that for the gift of the month, either Jennifer or Brown had to be buried. The girls confronted the pair with shovels and made Jen choose. Terrified, she let them take Brown, who was put in a sack, beaten, then buried in the inner court. When Jen realized she had allowed her friend to be killed, she broke down in tears. Then rage took over, and she started slapping Wendy over and over, demanding for her to bring Brown back. She then confronted the other orphans, calling them foolish for believing the lies about the Stray Dog and letting the "Princess" control them, also saying that they are anything but aristocrats. Jen says that though she is mad at them, she is mad at herself most of all, for letting them push her around out of fear. She then yanks off her rose broach and throws it to the floor. Wendy starts to cry, heartbroken and utterly humiliated, and runs from the room. After this, she is demoted to the lowest class, and Jennifer is made the new Rose Princess, having lost everything just to finally be accepted. |
