| After escaping, Jennifer and Wendy made a promise to eachother amongst the roses "everlasting, true love, I am yours". They sealed their pact by trading precious things. Jennifer gave Wendy a teddybear, which she named "Joshua", after her prince, and Wendy gave Jennifer her rose broach. The promise came to be known between them as the Oath or Promise of the Rose. Once this was done, they went to the orphanage together. |

| The Rose Garden Orphanage was not far from Gregory's house, also located in a desolate area. It was run by Mr. Hoffman and kept clean by Martha, both very strict and the only adults. The orphans living there besides Wendy where Clara, Diana, Eleanor, Meg, Amanda, Xavier, Thomas, Susan, Nicholas, and Olivia. They had to help keep the orphanage running by doing various chores. |

At some point during Jennifer's stay at the orphanage, the kids started the Red Crayon Aristocracy, after learning about goverment in class. The Rose Princess was in charge, and everyone had to follow the Rules of the Rose, which included submitting a monthly gift. Wendy was the Princess and made the bear Joshua her Prince. Diana was given the role of Duchess, with Meg and Eleanor just below her as Baroness and Countess. After them, came the Bourgeois class, with Nicholas, Susan, Thomas, Xavier, and Olivia. Amanda was at the very bottom-the Poor class. Jennifer was placed even lower than her-Beggar,-either because she was the new girl or because Wendy wanted the other girls to treat her badly so she could remain her closest friend. |
