| When Jennifer came to, she remembered nothing of the accident, her family or even the Princess, save for nearly drowning. She was in an unfamiliar room, dressed in boys' clothes. |

| The man who had saved Jennifer was odd-he seemed to think she was a boy and even called her "Joshua", who was apparently his son. He wouldn't let her leave his home, but he was very kind to her and gave her interesting-though slightly morbid- stories he had written to read. The stories were signed by him-his name was Gregory M. Wilson. She often saw him with a gun to his head, talking to himself and thought he might be a bit crazy. Even so, she never told him that she wasn't his son, feeling sorry for him. |

One day, Jennifer saw a girl her own age through the window of her basement room. The girl said her name was Wendy and that she lived at an orphanage nearby. She said "Joshua" was a prince in distress, and she was the fair princess who would rescue him. The two girls exchanged letters for months, quickly becoming friends, with Wendy constantly trying to convince Jen to come live at the orphanage with her. But Jennifer cared for Gregory and knew how much he cared for his "Joshua" and was hesitant to leave him. Wendy eventually convinced her, and Jennifer left with her. |
