The BLM Nevada State Director established the Nevada Groundwater Projects Office to facilitate the "...preparation of environmental impact statements for three applications for rights-of-way for the placement of surface facilities to develop and transport water across public lands..." [Note: Currently, the activities of this office do not include the Carson Valley.]
Incorporated in 1945, the stated mission of the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce is "...to identify and address the changing needs of the business community and to promote tourism in the Carson Valley..." Chamber membership is non-partisan, non-sectarian and non-exclusive, and includes more than 530 businesses, professionals and individuals.
The Carson Water Subconservancy District (CWSD) is a multi-county, bi-state agency dedicated to "...establishing a balance between the needs of the communities within the Carson River Watershed and the function of the river system..." The CWSD works within existing governmental frameworks to promote cooperative action for the watershed that crosses both agency and political boundaries.
Led by State Engineer Tracy Taylor, P.E., the Division of Water Resources is responsible for conserving, protecting, managing and enhancing the State's water resources for Nevada's citizens through the appropriation and reallocation of the public waters. The website is a great source of online permit information, and includes maps of Carson River water rights.
The Douglas County Community Development Department, now directed by Mimi Moss, provides services "...in the areas of Engineering, Planning/Code Enforcement, Building, Water/Sewer Utilities and Roads..." The Engineering Division, led by Carl Ruschmeyer, P.E., coordinates capital construction projects and provides engineering review of private projects.
The Record-Courier was created in 1904 when the Genoa Courier and the Gardnerville Record were combined. Now a part of the Swift Communications family, it is a great source of information and news, including the "Ruhenstroth Ramblings" column written by our neighbor, Gail Davis.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is performing an ongoing Research Project to evaluate changes in Carson Valley groundwater quality and depth by analyzing data reaching back to 1981. "...Identifying the occurrence of ground-water degradation and the factors related to these changes will help the County manage existing water-quality problems, plan development for minimal impacts, and maintain a reliable water supply..."
