History
The Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) has always been
about opportunity and need. In the early 1970s, PADRES, a Mexican American
priests' organization and Las Hermanas, a Mexican American women's group,
worked with the Texas Catholic Conference and the Archdiocese of San Antonio
to bring MACC into being.
The need was great -- there were no pastoral materials for the Spanish
speaking millions in the United States; religiously trained leaders were
sorely lacking in the Hispanic communities; and the Hispanic culture was
a mystery to most of those living in the U.S.
Today, all the liturgical documents used by English-speaking Catholics
have been translated into Spanish and are available for the Spanish- speaking
thanks to our efforts. MACC has become the "must stop" place
on the path to ministry with Hispanic populations across the country,
and indeed around the world. MACC is a cross-cultural center for theology,
pastoral ministry, the Spanish and English languages, research and the
study of the Hispanic reality.
MACC is a center of research, based on lived experience, on multiculturalism,
with expertise in the unique and beautiful culture and language of the
Hispanic, particularly the Mexican-American. We remain focused on that
reality we understand, the Mexican American culture, and from that foundation,
reach out to others. Established in 1972, in San Antonio, Texas, the capital
of the frontera, the Mexican American Cultural Center has been building
bridges between cultures for 25 years.
We are a bridge between borders and beyond our borders, as well. Our mobile
teams go across the country, and residential classes are held in San Antonio
and Guada-lajara, Mexico. Our staff comes from not only the United States
mainland, but also from South America and Puerto Rico. Our students come
from South America, Canada, Australia, and many European countries; and
after they've learned, they leave us, and go all over the world -- as
chaplains, missionaries, teachers.
