It was the biggest canine event of the year!
Contests included open race, obstacle, obedience, costume
and of course the Wiener Dog Race.
The actual races began at 10 am and concluded at noon.
Other events took place shortly afterward.
There were prizes and a costume contest lasting until about 2 pm.
The concession served refreshments and sure enough, hot dogs!
Although this was held by Friends of San Angelo Sate Park as a fundraiser
to benefit the Park. Local rescues, independents and other animal lovers were well represented.
The Humane Society of Tom Green County
had a booth close to the entrance.
San Angelo's own Dixon's Dachshund Rescue
was given the best seat in the house right behind the starting gate.
Throughout the morning, anouncements and advertisements were made to promote adoption of dachshunds and other mixed breeds present for both these local rescues.
Patty from San Angelo Animal Services
was seen on the grounds with her beloved rescued boxer mix.
There was Cindy Cook of Gingham Dog who is longtime volunter of Poodle Resuce.
Also Lisa Tumlinson of Pet Camp who has been a supporter of rescue and a sponsor of SASP.
Both Lisa and Cindy were coodinators of the agility/obstacle and obedience events.
Jana Larson and a Collie named "Goldie" of
New Beginnings Animal Rescue
took part in the obedience events.
There must have been a hundred Dachshunds present
as well as a dozen or more other breeds and mixes large and small.
A Doberman won 1st prize in the obstacle course (...no fair long legs!)
A Rat Terrier won 1st in the small breed open race.
The tiniest dog was an Isabella Teacup Chihuahua no bigger than a rat.
The largest dog must have been a Boerbull mastiff adopted from San Angelo Animal Services
There were Bichon, French bulldog, Boxer, Schnauzer, Pomeranian, Collie,
Aussies, Shepherds, Labs, Rat Terriers, Jack Russels, Poodles, Chihuahuas and more!
Plus lots of All Americans and Mixes.
All were here with thier humans to celebrate everyone's favourite, the Wiener Dog.
Then all of those dachshunds come to gather for this event.
Big ones, small ones and teensy ones. All ages pups to seniors.
Smoothies, wires and longhairs. Reds, blacks, blondes, chocolates, B&Ts, dapples and a piebald or two.
No ones ankles were safe. The place was teaming with Wiener dogs.
San Angelo has never seen such a sight to behold ever before.
It was the first races of its kind held here at the park.
SASP plans to hold another one next year, even bigger with more activities.
Perhaps there will be more rescue participation, Dachshund or any rescue.
Gail Metcalf (herself owned by a longhair dapple) and everyone of San Angelo State Park were very congenial to Jessica of
Dixon's Dachshund Rescue
We should all get together and cooperate with more involvement
next time for the 2nd annual Wiener Dog Races held 2006...
See you there!
