MESCHERS-SUR-GIRONDE AND NEARBY, THINGS TO DO
Sailing lesson available at Meschers
View of the grottes and carrelets at Meschers
Of course, there is the beach, a short walk from either of our houses, lovely anytime of the day or evening, winter or summer.  Go rockpooling when the tide is out too! There are two bar/restaurants actually on the beach, serving drinks and meals all day and evening in season.  Both have music in the evenings, often live.  Enjoy a relaxing meal from the terrace whilst the children can play within view on the beach. There are four beaches at Meschers, so there's no need to play sardines!

There is a small working port at about 15 minutes walk from the house, where you will find more restaurants, mainly seafood, often serving the fresh catch.  You can take a pleasure boat trip, offering various tours of the bay and further afield.

Meschers itself has a daily produce market selling fresh fish, oysters, cheeses, fruit and veg etc.  There is a supermarket a short stroll from the house for all provisions which open during lunchtime and Sunday mornings during the summer and all the local commerce you could want, including bread shops, banks, post office etc. In the summer there is a weekly night market with street entertainers.

As previously mentioned there is a tourist office near the house with all the up-to-date info on what's on.

As to more 'sporty' pursuits there are local windsurfing and sailing schools, a riding stables 5 minutes drive away, cycle and quad bike hire at the end of the road, including 'multi person pedelos', minigolf and surfing about 30 minutes north, and go-karting at Royan. There is a golf course outside Royan, near La Palmyre, and river fishing permits are available to buy.  New this year is an ariel-run in the trees at St Geogre de Didonne. There are two runs for the young and old - tried, tested and approved by us!

Meschers has some cave dwellings in the cliff face.  They are called 'grottes' and a group have been turned into an interesting  municiple museum.  There are some more privately own as permanent or holiday homes, one group is a hotel and restaurant.

Talmont is 5 kms away and is a beautiful 'carfree' village, famous for it's church and white painted, hollyhock adorn houses.  Continue exploring the estuary road and find small villages nestled in acres of vineyards, or small ports with quayside bars.

If you can tear yourself away from relaxing in the garden or on the beach, Royan is under 10kms away with more shops, large hypermarkets, market, beach etc.  From here you can take a boat across to Gironde, or a trip to the lighthouse. There is a 'love it or hate it' church built in the 1950's as Royan was badly bombed at the end of the second world war. There is a museum dedicate to the war nearby.  New to Royan are the Jardin du Monde botanic gardens.

St George de Didonne is another large beach, and some lovely 'belle epoch' 1920's/30's villas. Also loads more restaurants.  There is a casino at Pontaillac, a large zoo at La Palmyre, with over 1600 animals.  As you go up the coast the sea becomes wilder (la cote sauvage) with surfing beaches and pine forests.

At La Tremblade and Marennes (north, around 30 minutes drive) there are oyster beds, which you can visit by boat, and of course sample.  Cognac is about 60 kms away, with it's famous distilleries (visits available), river trips on the river Charente.  There is a great park here in the summer on the banks of the river with huge inflatables, a small pool, trampolines etc, a great day out for kids and adults alike.

La Rochelle is an hour's drive with its picturesque port, fantastic aquarium, and various museums - a clockwork model museum, model boat and train museum and a maritime museum.  Rochefort with its strong maritime history is an interesting trip out where a full sized replica ship is being built, also the amazing house of writer Pierre Loti.  The Roman capital of Saintes is about 40kms away. Bordeaux is about 100km away.

As you can see there is plenty to do in this region of the Charente Maritime, that is if you want to do anything!  At Rose Mousse you can leave your car and just enjoy the pleasures of Meschers on foot, by local buses/trains. Loads of up to date tourist info at both houses.
