Sustainability Through Biological Monitoring on the Root River

A river flowing through a city provides a great deal of insight into the environmental condition of the local community. As rain waters run across lawns, parking lots, and streets, and washes down storm drains, many of the pollutants released in the community are carried into the stream. The community of animals living in a stream is made up of creatures that can withstand the effects of these pollution events. Therefore, an evaluation and annual monitoring of a stream community provides a summary of the environmental changes implemented in the local community. This type of initial evaluation and monitoring of fish and insect life in a river, called biological monitoring, is an important part of any sustainability program. Click the links at left to learn about the current biological monitoring project occurring in the Root River Watershed, Racine County, Wisconsin, and how you can assess the condition of a local stream and begin a biological monitoring project in your community.
