Day Two. The Hike to Horombo
Next morning I got up 6:15am, we had our breakfast and packed our stuff
for the estimated 4 to 5 hour hike to Horombo. We started the climb
at around 9am, I had on the same things I had the day before except
this time I also carried my jacket with me because it can get cold near
Horombo. This walk was definitely tougher than the first one and I could
start to feel the effects of the dwindling oxygen especially on the
up hill sections, we stopped every now and then to drink some water
and at the half way point to eat our lunch and to rest for about 15min.
After about 5 and a half hours we arrived at Horombo only to find that
the person with the permit for our huts had not yet arrived so we had
to stay out in the cold until they finally got there.
Now I was really beginning to feel the effects of the low oxygen, I
found it hard to carry my bags to my hut. And later on we learned that
the 2 teachers had decided to turn back while on the way to Horombo.
That night another student who had made it to Horombo but had at one
point passed out, decided not to attempt the next days hike to Kibo.
The night was very cold and my toes were freezing in the sleeping bag
and I had to toss and turn to try to generate some heat, but finally
morning came around and after breakfast it was it was time to hit the
road again.

A few minutes after arriving at Horombo.
