Vestal Little League History Vestal, New York |
In the Big-Inning The 1960's........ |
In 1962, the Vestal Little League was required by Williamsport to split into 2 separate leagues, each with its own charter. The West League encompassed all players west of Rt.26, and the East League all players east of Rt.26. |
Both leagues were governed by the same board of directors and played their games at the same field. Entry into the All Star tournaments, however, required each league to send its own team. Due to insurance regulations, NO interleague play was allowed, exception being a championship game between each leagues champion and all-star play. |

During the mid 50's thru the 70's, Vestal grew tremendously, nearly doubling its population. As the town grew, so did the league, from it's original 6 teams in 1951 to over 20 in 1963. In the early 60's, the "neighborhood" team structure gave way to coaches choosing their players from a large player pool. Major League teams no longer had assigned Farm teams to pull players from, as a separate minor league system was established. Games went from being played 3 days a week to a full 7, in order to accomodate all the teams. Angelo Field had to have lights installed to do this, with games starting at 6pm and 8pm on weekdays, to a full days slate on weekends. |
