Vestal Little League History
Vestal, New York
In The Big - Inning
A Visit Back to the 1950's
Folks have forgotten, or some never knew, just how small a town Vestal was in the 1950's .. The Litle League was a very popular summer activity for the town.
This Oct 12, 1955 photo shows Jake Pitler, Brooklyn Dodgers 1st base coach, speaking with Vestal & Endicott Little Leaguers about how the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in the World Series. This took place at the annual Little League Dinner sponsored by Endicott Johnson, IBM, General Electric, Ansco, and Ozalid, and held at the Endicott Johnson Rec Center. Listening to Coach Pitler are Dick Pugh, far left, then Little Leaguers Gary Starbuck and Terry Harris of Vestal and Richard Redolphy of Endicott.. The dinner hosted a variety of celebrities, 62 Little League teams and Teen teams from around the area
Is player Jerry Pierson giving or getting instructions from his manager-father Bernie Pierson ? Teammate Bill Montross seems a bit confused by what he is hearing. It must have worked, since Barney & Dick won the 1955  playoff game to tie the series at 1 game apiece.
Other players  for Barney & Dick in the photo on the right are, L-R, John Morton, Phil Alderman, Dave Weston blowing bubble gum, Dan Weston, and Doug Alsup.
Individual Achievement Awards are a big part in the Little League, where players strive for excellence and are awarded for their efforts. Here at the 1955 Little League Banquet, Retiring President Perry Starbuck (left) and his successor Robert Hynes (right) award the players the following trophies. L-R: Ron Stark,Dave Gustin, and Don Pierson (Home Run Champions), John Phelps (Pitching Trophy), and Bruce MacQueen (League Batting Trophy). Other individual awards are given to Team Batting Champ, All Star selection, Fielding Champion, and Team Championship trophies.
