Vestal Little League History
A Season Replayed - 1979
The 29th Vestal Little League season opened  May 12th  with the Annual Little League Parade which started at the Town Hall. Featured in the parade were the Vestal High School Marching Band, the African Road Junior High Marching Band, Vestal Wranglers, American Legion Post 89 Color Guard, Vestal Police department, Vestal Fire Department, Endicott VFW Post 1449, Vestal Emergency Squad, various team sponsor floats, Cinderella Softball teams, and a whole lot of Little Leaguers marching down front Street on their way to Angelo Field. Opening day ceremonies began at 11am, with the first game at noon.
Kurt Davis, 3rd baseman for Vestal Police, waits for the throw while a Post 89 player slides safely into 3rd. Vestal Police went on to win the game under the lights, 8-0.
Opening day games at Angelo Field were dominated by the pitchers. Mark Carr of Vestal Police struckout 14 as Police defeated K of C 8-5 in the opening game.
Pat Dunfee of Post 89 also K'ed 14 as Post 89 squeaked by Elks Club 8-7. Jim Nealon's no-hitter with 12 strikeouts highlighted the day as his LaZenka team beat Sanitary Disposal 4-1.

Vestal West All-Stars learned the true meaning of "never give up" when they erased a late inning 9-1 deficit vs. Endwell to win 13-12 in the district tournament. This celebration of the go ahead run in the last inning  of their
victory.
In the game against Endwell, Pat Kelly scores the go ahead run on Jeff Watson's RBI single in the photo at the right. Moments earlier, Brian Mabee scored the tying run, breaking his leg at homeplate.
Upon arriving in Oneonta for more district tournament play, officials found that the mound was substantially too high. Above, tournament officials spend time with shovels and rakes lowering the height of the mound. Unfortunately for Vestal, it didn't matter in the end as a perennial strong Oneonta team ground out a 9-3 victory.

OTHER 1979 HIGHLIGHTS

In a playoff for the West Major title, K of C came from behind to defeat Vestal Police 3-2. K of C scored 3 runs in the 5th inning on triples by Pat kelly and Dan Clink, with the game winning double by Jeff Watson.

Vestal's East West Minor League 10 year old team split a 2 game series with Endicott Youth Association 10 year old team. Endicott won the first game July 25 by a 10-3 score. vestal won the 2nd game 2 days later 11-10.

On Friday, 7/27, the Vestal 8-9 year old team defeated Endicott 8-9 year old team 19-2. Vestal pitchers In K. Kim and Rob Moyer combined to throw a no-hitter.
