The Highlight of the 1974 Vestal Little League season was the success enjoyed by the East Major All-Star Team, paving a road deep into the Little League playoffs much like the 1972 West Major team did.

In the photo on the left, Vestal East star Gary Williams has a welcoming committee greeting him at homeplate after his 210 foot homerun over the left field fence in the game vs. Williamsville. Moments later, in the picture on the right, the scene is repeated as Vestal East star Mike McDonough trots home after his 230 foot homerun over the centerfield wall. McDonough led the Vestal east team in tournament play with a .650 batting average.
Vestal East Star Ed Farley waits to bat in the 3rd inning vs. Williamsville. Moments later, he follows up McDonough's homerun with one of his own. Both Farley and McDonough belted 3 homeruns in tournament play.
Vestal east teammates all seem to be grabbing at catcher Mike McDonough's upper arms as they welcome him at homeplate following his 2 run homer in the 3rd inning vs. Williamsville.
In the game vs. Williamsville, this safe call by umpire Tom Carey was hotly contested by Williamsville, although as the photo proves, the umpire made the right call, as the Vestal East runner's foot gets to homeplate before he is tagged. Tom Carey, an official in baseball and football throughout the Southern Tier for decades, passed away this August 2002. He'll be missed by many.
