I just watched the movie "On the Edge" about the Irish boy who tried to commit suicide. And I don't know why, but it ticked something off in me. It's just disgusting the way we're shafting our kids, you know? Education funds are constantly being slashed, and whenever the budget is augmented, the bulk of it is sucked up by contractors building new shit, when what the kids really need are more and better teachers, smaller-sized classrooms, and enough money to afford some decent paperback books each year (NOT textbooks).
And I think about the girl whose path I crossed back in Massachusetts, the 23-year-old junkie who's probably going to spend the next five to ten years of her life in prison, and I think about her boyfriend who fled the cops and will probably spend ten to twenty years in prison.
And I think of the DEA and how I'm supposed to respect them and all. But I don't, and I can't.
It's because of the DEA that those two kids got hooked on junk.
It's because of our Republican congressmen slashing education spending that those two kids got hooked on junk.
It's because of greedy CEO's who couldn't afford to live on $9 million a year, and instead had to lay off 20% of their workforce, during a profitable year no less, just to make it more profitable.
It's because of shareholders who demand that the company serve them and them alone: fuck the employees and the customers.
It's because, over the last ten years, the average CEO's salary went from 150 times that of their average employee to over 500 times that of their average employee.
It's because of the Republican pigs who seem to think that there's nothing wrong with any of this, and that's just how the world works.
And I think of the Pentagon, and Rumsfeld, and the lies that they've told.
And I think of Reagan and Bush I and all of the other reprobates and how it was they who sold germ warfare materials to Saddam, how it was they who trained and financed Osama bin Laden, how it was they who, in the sullied name of 'freedom', backed, financed, and defended some of the dirtiest dictators to have ever lived in our lifetime.

PORTRAIT OF AN 'ALL AMERICAN' TOWN
This has been a long time coming. The following are brief vignettes of My Town:
There are over 100 churches and about 9 bars in My Town. With over 100 churches, you'd think that some of those parishioners would help provide some free day-care services for the single mothers in town, but you'd be wrong. There are more important things to serving the will of God than helping poor, single mothers with day care costs.
My Town was elected as one of the top ten "All American Cities" in the United States. For some reason, banality, prejudice, homophobia, and bible-beating are the only things that officials like to claim as being All American.
As with most of the places I've lived, I have a love/hate relationship with the town. Little things about this place piss me off: the town won't allow adult movies to be sold or rented (just another way for the religious right to shove their beliefs down everybody's throat). The mention of a topless club would cause rioting in the streets. To overhear otherwise decent-looking people cracking "queer" jokes is not uncommon. There is only one decent coffee house in town, which is nice but it's frequented by business-types, so the fun meter is always set on low. The place that would appear to serve the best Mexican food sells the absolute worst. And there's a jerk on main street who runs a gasoline store that fools people into paying over $2.00 a gallon at the full-service pump; since they're usually tourists passing through, he gets away with his legalized act of petty theft.
There's a lot of money in this town which seems to be concentrated in only a few people's hands, which is another distinctly "All American" trait.
I can't help but feel that most of the people living here are being robbed blind. I can't help but feel that this town could be a hell of a lot more beautiful (and economically successful) than it is if only there were some way to wrest power from the wrinkled hands of some stingy old codgers, coots, and crones.
One side of town is mostly affluent, while the other side of town is mostly poor (All American!).
One side of Rich Town is very rich with huge houses circling a dreary, wrought-iron-fenced golf course, while the other side of Rich Town is really nothing more than varying gradients of fairly humble, middle-class domiciles.
One side of Poor Town is rather quaint, and there seem to be many people working hard to make the best of things, while the other side of Poor Town is gang-bang city, tatter-and-rags rentals, the obligatory and fast-footed crack houses, and just general despair. It kills me when I see little kids, usually Mexican, playing amidst the garbage and decay of poor Poor Town.
Most of the people here, even the lower-incomed, are apparently Republican (which proves that propaganda works).
Race relations between the Mexicans and the whites are cool to put it mildly. Won't go into it now…. Aside from those two races, there are a handful of Black and Asian folk in the population of 50,000. Of course, there are many variations on the theme of white, Mexican, black, and Asian.
There is an airport on the south end of town that has at least 100 carcasses of old passenger jet planes lined up neatly between the fences, buildings and runways. The German and Canadian military, among others, do some air training there, perhaps because the terrain is so similar to that of Afghanistan's, perhaps just because the airport is so big and little-used.
It's an ugly town in many ways, with little patches of beauty. But My Town shouldn't feel too bad about that, because the same could be said for most American towns of similar size.
One thing capitalism has put a meager value on is beauty. Either beauty just doesn't pay, or achieving it is too expensive to make the effort, or maybe people who know how to make money just don't know how to make beauty. Hence, most of the city is an eyesore of parking lots, vacant strip malls (with brand new strip malls being built in other parts of the town), little loan-shark shops where fools can get payday and car title loans, more car dealerships than I can count, fast food joints with dilapidated signage, liquor stores, billboards, gas stations, etc.
Huge areas on 'the bad side' of town are going to rot, yet instead of investing any money in those areas, the city just keeps pushing at the boundaries of town, out into the prairie to make more gaudy strip malls, more dull suburbs, more bland office space, more baking parking lots….
And…that's about it for this episode.

I am an American living in Europe and watch CNN and MSNBC for US news.
During the reporting of Olympic metal wins, the Fox feed was on and only mentioned two silvers and a bronze won by the USA--no mention of the gold or who won it.
The Europeans in the room were outraged--said it was typical, no one counts but Americans.
I said, naw, they (the reporters) just made a mistake. But, sure enough, all evening we heard about American wins and nothing about other wins even if it was gold.
We switched to BBC and ALL wins were reported and celebrated.
I wonder what would happen if America at large realized that in the eyes of the civilized world, we are the playground bullies. The petulant, selfish, self-centered babies that are the first to grab and the first to bawl if we don't get our way.

I've been thinking about changing the name of this page, because I don't want to make enemies out of friends. I think that there are many people who would read these pages and agree with much of what I've said, but for various reasons they would be turned off or turned away by the title, "Why America Sucks."
The title is, of course, a test. I am testing the rules. As long as I can run this site with this name, then America hasn't devolved into the police state that so many fear�yet.
Some would say that I'm being paranoid, that such a thing would never happen. They may be right.
But I never dreamed that a presidential election would, or could, be so blatantly stolen in this country as it was about a year ago.
I never dreamed that the highest court in the land, the pinnacle of all that is supposed to be fair and just in this country, would pass a ruling that was so obviously partisan.
I never dreamed that the FBI could have the power to arrest and detain a person, civilian or not, without having to tell anybody the reason why.
And recently Resident Bush has tried to sign into law a new 'presidential secrecy' act that effectively allows the country's number one 'elected' official to conduct his business in an untouchable ivory tower. Why? Don't ask.
You see, among the American Right, the prospect of right or wrong no longer comes into play. For them, it's all about winning or losing.
