ST.net California Meet, June 2002 Continued......
Day 2:  Goat Trails and Highways
The next morning was a big day for our big ride together.  After a pleasant early breakfast the group broke up in two:  Goldylocks, Redcliffs, CWS, Dave, Ken, and myself went on The BIG ride.  Taliskar, Grizzelda, & Bluepoof decided to visit Hearst Castle as well as do a much smaller ride south of San Simeon.  But before we went our separate ways, we all rode to Cambria to gas up and have our group photo taken by a few stunned passersby.
The ST.net Members.  I know its not the best pic and its incomplete.  Ill let Bluepoof handle the completeness with her ride report.  From Left to Right:  Taliskar (Ted), Goldylocks (Ed), Grizzelda (Terry), CWS (Carl), Ksann (Ken), Redcliffs (Stephen), Shizoku (Dave).  I took the picture.  Bluepoof was missing cause she was taking a pic herself.  Hey Terry, are we boring you?  She wasnt feeling too good that day.  Just kidding Terry.
Soon, we were on the road and carving up that wonderful goat trail called Santa Rosa Creek Road.  SRC started out in the heart of Cambria and climbed up a couple of thousand feet above the coast.  All the while it passed through a few country homes and farms.  The road followed Santa Rosa Creek, which meandered left and right, up and down, in and out, which pretty much described our ride.  The road was also bumpy and narrow in most places.  But the peaceful views and the stunning vista at the top was worth it I think, at least for the most part.  SRC road really isnt a racer road but just a scenic road that just happens to be twisty and bumpy.  Hence most of our members referred to it as a Goat Trail.  Ive taken this road before and of course I was familiar with it.  At one point the road went into two very tight hairpins with a steep climb.  I knew this of course so I was already in 1st gear before I got to the steep uphill hairpin turns.  A few of the riders were caught off guard and were in a too tall of a gear.  Hee-hee.  I did the same thing my first time on this road!  In addition, I didnt find the road too much trouble as the Bandits upright riding position allowed me to relax and let the bike take the bumps.
Those dang steep hairpins!  The mother of all goat trails has got to be Santa Rosa Creek Road in Cambria.  The views were worth it.  On a clear day (when those dang clouds arent around) its possible to see the ocean from up there.
After Santa Rosa Creek Road, the group was ready for some smoother and faster twisties.  And thats exactly what we got when we switched to Vineyard Road, which lead us to G14.  The scenery along Vineyard road was right out of a Hollywood period film.  The vineyards along this road were beautiful, quaint, and so serene in a country sort of way.  I really have problems describing them because the visual show just cues up feelings of tranquility , age and beauty.  When I think of the wine country of California, the vineyards I saw there were exactly what I had envisioned in my head.  Vineyard road twisted and turned, rolled up and down, yet threw us no surprises.  It just gave us consistently smooth lefts and rights.  While on a left hand sweeping turn, we passed by two deer feeding by the roadside.  They just looked up while chewing their food.  Thank goodness thats all they did.
