A Series of Missed Turns (or wrong ones) Back on the road, I missed the turn that lead to the 101 Freeway and we had to backtrack to find it. We were on the final leg of the trip, which was Highway 46. It was long 400-mile day and I missed (again) the exit to Highway 46. More like, I swerved to miss the exit to Highway 46! Dave had the good sense of taking over the lead as he knew this area also. I think he was getting a bit impatient after I missed two turns in a row. Either that or his ZZR1200 is really tough to do U-turns on! The 46 was mainly straight as it passed through pretty wineries, but it was also filled with dawdling tourists in cagers and SUVs. Dave was in no mood to watch clueless drivers putter along at 55 mph on a road that can easily handle 80 mph so he set a blistering pace, passing 2 or 3 cars in a row. No doubt his ZZRs power helped! Our antics were soon answered by getting stuck behind a large truck carrying hay bales! It was like riding through a hailstorm of hay and Dave was right in the middle of this storm wearing only his T-Shirt! I could feel his pain and suffering as we sat there in 4th gear waiting to pass. We were all relieved to get past that stupid truck
We arrived in Cambria and rode downtown to a nice little restaurant called Mustache Petes. Great food! We were of course starved for nourishment as we wolfed down our burgers. Inside the restaurant, we met a couple (more like they met us) who rode a Harley Davidson Electra-Glide from Orange County! Small world I thought. We discussed the roads, our lives back home, and motorcycling in general. It was a pleasant conversation even though they rode Harleys. See. Not all HD riders are asses!
Our final 5 miles took us down Pacific Coast Highway to San Simeon were we met the rest of the ST.net folks from the Bay Area. All in all we covered 400 miles with 2/3 of them being twisties. |
