12 Sept. 2001 President Robert Corrigan Re: Dean Joel Kassiola complaint Dear President Corrigan: I have had a serious problem with the SFSU police not being open with me and actually covering up a crime on campus. One of my latest complaints about them was that they had told me back in June that they would post flyers that show a sketch of the criminal who threatened to kill me. They didn’t post them until I found out in August that they still weren’t up. Then I only found two of them at the building where the threat occurred. I decided to ask for a meeting with the dean of my college (after I of course asked the police to post more flyers than the two I found). Dean Joel Kassiola sent dean’s list students letters saying they were welcome to come and meet him if they had any concerns. This letter is my documentation to you of a complaint about Dean Kassiola. I had an appointment on August 30, 2001. He was not there when I arrived at my appointment time. He came later and rushed to his office and talked on the phone in there for ten minutes. His office door was open and I could hear him going on about how he doesn’t get paid enough and asking about his friend’s son who plays some sport. By the time I was asked to come into his office, it was thirty-five minutes past my appointment time. I had to be at a class in less than 5 minutes and so only got to talk to him for about four minutes. I set up another appointment with him for September 5, 2001. This was a day I do not go to campus, but I took whatever the receptionist gave me and made a special trip. Again, when I got there at my appointment time of 12:30, he was not there and he came in the office area at 12:47. He didn’t say anything to me but he stood right in front of me and looked down at me where I was sitting. The receptionist said Roger Ringer is here to see you as he had now walked part way to his office. I looked at him and he was then blowing his nose. He did not look back, but went in his office. There had been a woman who was there around 12:45 who I assume is a faculty member. She had left after waiting for him for a minute at that time, and now a woman who works in the office, June (?) went to get her. The faculty woman came back at 12:48 and went in to talk to the dean. He asked her to close the door. At 12:58 they came out. At 12:59 the dean points his finger right in front of me where I was still seated and said, “I’ll be right back, sir.” He then went to speak to a different woman in her office. So again, I was made to wait for over a half hour. I believed it was done on purpose the first time, and when it happened the second time, I considered it further evidence of planned intimidation. During the meeting, Kassiola told me he had not discussed my police problem with the university police and that he thinks they are “quite good”. I cannot believe him because of the way he talked to me and made me wait. I believe the campus police are still investigating me, and I want it to stop. I also consider it an ethical violation if a university employee should lie to me, something the police have done several times. I brought up with the dean the topic of book selection in classes. I told of a professor’s telling me about his lack of freedom to choose the textbooks in his class. I did not mention the name of the professor, but will now to you, because I am disgusted by the cover up of my crime and what it has done to me. Professor Walsh from the Criminal Justice department told me in June 2001, that he had to use the textbooks he uses in his CJ 300 class. He said that the professor who used to teach that class selected the books, and he couldn’t change the books now even if he wanted to. I relate this because I see a problem with professors and other faculty not being open and honest, and that does not look well upon SFSU. Sincerely, Roger
