Reed
12 Sept. 2001 Charles Reed Dear Chancellor: On August 24th at approximately 2:16 PM, I called the SFSU President’s office and said I was interested in a meeting with the president. I was asked what my problem was and I said I was having trouble with the SFSU police. The man on the phone asked me the names of the police and I told him Wible and Walter. I did not hear back from the president’s office and called one week later. On August 31st at 10:33 AM, I called the president’s office and a woman answered, I told her I called a week ago. She said she would ask around and to please hold. Then a man came on the phone who said “we were instructed to” tell you to call Dr. Saffold. When a person calls the president’s office with a problem, common decency prompts for an answer. I should not have had to call a week later when I have a serious problem with my experience at SFSU. The other time I called the president’s office was in April when I wanted help in getting the police to investigate a terrorist threat I received. The office did get me help that time by calling a Dr. Bowman who arranged a meeting for me with the chief of police and him. I have found it typical on the SFSU campus that officials ignore phone calls and emails. A letter I gave to Chief Wible on May 4, 2001 was never answered, nor were questions in emails I have sent her recently about my case. A letter I delivered to Dr. Saffold, Chief Wible’s superior, on June 18, 2001 was never answered. I am asking your office to bring about change. Students who have questions or problems should not be ignored. San Francisco State is not a welcoming place for conservative students. I wanted to meet with President Corrigan to tell him about the bigotry I have experienced. He claims he values diversity, but in reality, I am afraid he is typical of the far left and uses “diversity” to simply mean people of color who espouse the ideology of the left. I live in San Francisco and do not have other practical options for attending a different four-year university than SFSU. A California State University should be welcoming to all residents. I have to sit through classes where the professors and students say outlandish things about the world and if I give my opinion, I am often dismissed – and worse, laughed at or labeled a danger to others. If Mr. Corrigan can’t bring about tolerance at SFSU, then I firmly want someone to investigate what is going on at the little tyranny called San Francisco State. I received a death threat after a professor labeled me as a problem student who could possibly cause physical harm to others. She said that in front of the whole class. I received a death threat shortly after that. People in the Ethnic Studies department ignored my emails, and when I went there to tell my side of the story after they had sent me a harsh email, I was still treated as a real problem. I didn’t even want to talk about politics, but Dr. Thomas Almaguer from Ethnic Studies, asked me if I didn’t think there were too many white men in Congress. I thought it was outlandish that he would try to change the topic and upset me by making this statement. I quickly said I didn’t believe in affirmative action and may have said those white men are elected, and went back to discussing my problem of them threatening to drop me from my class. Why are the officials at SFSU so extreme in their politics that I get it shoved down my throat whenever they want to verbally harass me? Today it happened again, and I am including the letter of documentation. Most of my professors shove their leftist views down student’s throats regularly. And then if I give my take, I am labeled as dangerous and I see it as a planned behavior by these people to silence or intimidate me. Professors have singled me out. There is no tolerance for conservatives at SFSU. There is persecution in my case, and I am once again asking for President Corrigan to address this. I do not even want a meeting with him anymore. I only want a letter saying what, if anything he is going to do to bring about tolerance for different political views at his university. I will give my letter to his office on Sept. 12th or 13th. Since he has ignored my letter delivered on June 18, 2001, and my phone call asking for assistance on August 24, 2001, I am asking for help from higher sources. And may I make it clear. In my classes I sit there and listen to the professor and the student’s and sometimes give my view when it is acceptable for people to give feedback. I am not the most talkative person in the classes in which I have experienced the bigotry. It is not I who is not open-minded; it is the professor’s, and I expect professionalism, not despotism. I have enclosed letters of complaint about staff members’ recent misconduct: Dean Kassiola, Prof. Busacca, and Chief Wible and Det. Sgt. Walter. Also, I would like you to discuss with Chief Wible how her department can improve. I have experienced a lot of stress since February over the death threat I received. Please read the letter and emails I have written her so you will know about how I was treated. I have not yet received a response from the police about putting more flyers up on the front doors of Burk Hall and want that settled, as well as all my concerns in my letters and emails. I actually want a letter of apology and explanation from all the people I have complained about. I also still believe the police did not question everyone involved properly. I think they handled the women who witnessed the crime, Annette and Jeanette, and the professor with kid gloves. Obviously someone in the Ethnic Studies Dept. or that class knows the criminal, and he could be found if someone who is not biased against me stepped in and demanded tougher questioning. I still want Dean Jim Okutsu, Dr. Tomas Almaguer, and Prof. Marlon Hom questioned. I don’t care if they are of high status at the school; they involved themselves in the matter, and I received the threat the day after I received the email from Okutsu and shortly after visiting with Almaguer and Hom. I am also asking you to consider terminating Chief Wible or suspending her without pay because of her negligence and bias against me, a student who was a crime victim in her jurisdiction. Will you please tell me the proper agency to address my concerns about the mishandling of the terrorist threat I received? Please tell me of any other people or agencies that I may send my complaints to. I look forward to receiving a letter from you. Sincerely, Roger Enclosure ( ) Teacher review of Richard Busacca
