"BAILEY"
1993 - 1999
Bailey was my baby.  She was a daughter of "Muffin".  Bailey was not a purebred Aussie.  Her father was 1/2 Heeler, but unless you knew her actual geneology, she was an Aussie through and through!  I picked her out of the litter and took her home with me while I was attending college in LaGrande, Oregon.  Bailey grew up with my son, who was only two when we got her.  She watched out for him, guarded him from danger and played with him tirelessly.
Bailey was always with us, be it a trip to the store, or a long drive to Idaho.  She was the perfect companion, friend, and protector.  Although, Bailey was a loving sweetheart.  I always felt safe travelling alone just me and her.  I always knew she would do everything in her power to protect me.
Bailey was the extreme definition of a velcro dog.  I never once had to look for her or call her back because she was always by my side or she had one eyeball glued to me if she adventured off a bit.
"Bailey" as a puppy
Folks often laughed at her because she knew that she was not allowed in the corrals while we were sorting cattle.  She would lay stone still outside the corral fence and never take her eyes off of me.  If I happened to leave the corral through another gate, by the time I had it latched again, Bailey would have run top speed around the corral and would be at my feet.  It was just expected that if I was there, so was Bailey.  She even rode in the hot tractor all day with me while baling hay.  If I didn't let her ride, she would walk beside the tractor ALL DAY, so I just resolved that she didn't mind the heat and away we would go!
Bailey's only fault was that she was horribly accident prone.  She had suffered a broken leg as a pup, a shattered ankle in 1995, organophosphate poisoning in 1997, a torn eyelid, and a pinched nerve in her back.  We had quite an investment in her in veterinary bills.  However, I would spend everything I have if I could just have her back!
"Bailey" in 1997
On a warm Spring afternoon in 1999, Bailey was laying near our lane (Two miles long, private dirt road) in the sun with the other dogs.  Due to her past medical history, she was a little stove up at times and moved slowly.  A young kid pulling a stock trailer came by our home driving too fast and not paying attention, hit her with the dual of his trailer.
My family was devastated and we still miss her terribly.  Days are just not the same without my "shadow" We have many dogs here at Rocking Z that are loved dearly, but Bailey was unique in every way and there will never be another like her!
