Like nearly anyone who has this type of dog we got started out of a love for the breed, but with only a minimal understanding of what it meant to own one. We bought our first Amstaff from Skip Loveless. I was so proud of her. I walked her a mile and a half every day around the perimeter of our neighborhood. It didn't take long to realize that there were people that would rather I didn't have her near their children and pets. The risks to her very existence seemed to come from every angle. When contractors reroofed our house you could see them eyeing her and it was obvious that their intentions weren't good.
We showed her for almost three years in Kansas before breeding her to CH Hines' Sly Stallone. That litter produced six puppies three of which have completed their conformation championships, one in Germany. One of the two males that has yet to finish his title went to Tyler TX where he has been shown and pointed locally. One of the four bitches, and a really nice one I might add, stayed in Wichita where her owners spayed her and love her dearly, but have no interest in showing. The last puppy stayed with her brother and us where she soaks up the sun on California's central coast and does what these dogs do best, love their families that is. Late this fall she will be exhibited in the KS and OK area as Imogene Hines recently evaluated her and insisted that I send her there so she could show her. Hopefully she'll be there in time for the Tulsa shows in early November.
I know this is supposed to be about us, but I can't say enough about Imogene. She's helped us immensely along the way and when other people would have ruled us out for whatever reason she gave us the chance we needed. Her breeding produces a temperament that is unrivaled in stability and non-aggressiveness, yet still has the drive necessary to perform in a working capacity. There's no telling how many conformation champions she's produced and there's no telling how many more are to come.
Thanks Imogene.
Rockin' M is a family affair, as some of the following pages will demonstrate. My daughter shows "Little Bit" a dog that was reposessed from a less than suitable home. Showing dogs is great fun for her, but it comes with great responsibilities as well. She has to train and work her own dog and has other dog related jobs to do around the house too.
My son is still too young and small to handle his own Amstaff, but does his share to help out with them and looks forward to showing one in the future. We are entertaining thoughts of letting him show our Pomeranian "Mandy".
My wife has her hands full with maintaining a house with dogs and chasing our 2 year old daughter around. She's not as fond of the dogs or showing as the rest of us, but helps out in more ways than I can name and I'm eternally grateful.
Me, well I'm a pretty busy guy. That's why I need all the people that support this venture. I'm an eleven year veteran of the United States Air Force which sends me all over the world somewhat regularly. ( More than some, less than others ) I'm a video production/documentation specialist. In other words, I make videos for the Air Force as well as other branches and government agencies. It's an exciting, but fast paced career field that sometimes gets the better of me. I thank God for my family and friends that make it possible for me to do anything else.
In the following pages you'll see some of our dogs and be able to view their pedigrees. There are lot's of pictures, so be ready to wait for the pages to open. I hope you enjoy them.
Take Care,
James L. Monk
