As the riders flash by ...
Waiting in the pits at Wembley Stadium tomorrow night while 16 top speedway riders thunder round the track in the final of the world championships, will be a young Edmonton man named Bob Andrews.
Bob, who lives in Shirley Grove and rides for Wimbledon, is first reserve. His chance will come if one of the competing riders, representing seven nations, should suffer the cruel blow of mechanical failure or injury.
SPORTS PARADE - By - PETER JAY
With no chance in the competition proper, the local boy - whose hard style of racing has endeared him to fans up and down the country - can upset the hopes of more fancied candidates. The financial reward is worth having too. If he gets no rides at all, Bob will collect 12 10s, for just sitting in the pits. Starting money is 2 10s, a race, and if Bob should happen to win just one outing he will collect 15 for a little over a minute's work!
Bob, who recently married his childhood sweetheart from Chingford, very nearly reached the final as a competitor, bad luck in one of the qualifying meetings kept his total score a point or two lower than others more fortunate.
