THOMAS and HANNAH, were members of the Baptist Church of Exeter, Luzerne,PA. ofwhich Elder Davis Dimock was pastor. Elder Dimock removed from Exeter to Montrose, Susquehanna,PA. in June 1809 and organized the Harford Baptist Church. THOMAS and HANNAH were charter members, as were Stephen and Sally Harding. A church was built on land in front of the cemetery, belonging to Deacon Powers. In later years a "Good Templars" Lodge was organized. Its members pledged themselves to use no alcoholic beverages. It was a secret order. The Hardings were members of it and also the church. Deacon Powers and some others were opposed. The secret part caused dissention and the good Deacon turned them out of the church, on his own authority and even tried to stop burial in the cemetery. He tore down the building and took it away. It had stood near the road south of the gate of the present Harding Cemetery. THOMAS HARDING 7TH was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was at the Battle of Burgoyne in 1777. He had enlisted 17 Sep.1776 in the First Independent Company of Wyoming Valley,PA, which was Captain Durkees Regiment and server throughout the entire war. THOMAS and HANNAH cabin stood south of the cemetery on a knob near the mill road. Two generation later the soiled was reported still rich and black. PERRY GREEN HARDING 1ST, was born 19 Apr, 1790, at Exeter Township,LuzernePA. He was married in 1815, to PARMELIA (POLLY) VANWINKLE, she was born 4 May 1792, at Gibson Township Susquehanna,PA. to ELIAS VANWINKLE and LUCY PRICE. Their Children: Parmelia, ELIAS THOMAS, Philander, Mahala, Charles, Alvah, Price and Clark. POLLY died 25 Jan.1861 at South Harford, Susquehanna,PA. After her death PERRY married Sophia Tupper who died 11 Dec 1868. PERRY was killed in a railroad accident 11 July1874 at Peckville, Lack,PA while visiting his son ELIAS THOMAS HARDING. He was 84 at the time. He was buried along side his wife POLLY and his father THOMAS at the Harding Cemetery,South Harford Twp, Susquehanna,PA. He succeeded to his father`s farm which was located directly across from the cemetery, and built the present frame house standing there. ELIAS THOMAS HARDING, was born 29 July 1820, at South Harford Twp,Susq,PA. He was married 16 Apr. 1846 to HARRIET CARRIE MANZER at South Gibson,Susquehanna,PA. she was born 15 Jun. 1829 at Fly Creek,Otsego,NY.,to LAWRENCE MANZER and MARY PRICE. HARRIET father was a farmer and Baptist Minister, He married ELIAS and HARRIET. Their Children: Solon, Lawrence, Christopher, PERRY GREEN 2ND, Ellen and Mabel.ELIAS was a farmer, When the Civil War broke out he enlisted 13 Aug. 1861, as a Private in Company M 4th PA Calvary. He enlisted as a Blacksmith. He was wounded at the "Seven Day Battle", Malvern Hill,VA. He later held the rank of Sgt. He was discharged 30 Nov. 1864. ELIAS and HARRIET moved to Peckville,Lack,PA about 1870 and lived at 806 Main St. ELIAS worked as a Powdermaker,He was later disabled and drew a small pension for his serviced in the Civil War. He died 25 Aug. 1895,and was buried with Military Honors in Prospect Hill Cem, Peckville,PA. HARRIET died 21 Dec 1916, and is buried along side ELIAS and their daughter Ellen. PERRY GREEN HARDING 2ND., was born 27 Mar 1849,atHarford Twp,Susq,PA. He was married about 1874 to LORINDA FINCH, born 1 May 1853, to MERRITT FINCH and MARY PHILLIPS. Their Children: BLANCH ESTELLE, Charles, Price.The family lived at 812 Hickory St.Peckville,Pa. PERRY worked as a Powdermaker. LORINDA died 18 Aug. 1895. She is buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Peckville,Lackawanna,PA. After her death PERRY remarried about 1898 to Henrietta V. Lewis daughter of Tabor John & Elizabeth Follett Lewis. Henrietta was previous married to George May. Her children by George were Frank, and Myron. Perry and Henrietta children:Leon, Iva and Alton. PERRY left Henryetta and moved to Delhi.Madison,NY. PERRY died 13 Jan. 1931 at Cortland,NY. Henrietta died 2 Apr. 1949. BLANCH ESTELLE HARDING, was born 12 Oct. 1875,at Jermyn,Lackawanna,PA. She was married 26 June 1893 to JOHN FRANKLIN JONES, born 24 Dec. 1872, at Plymouth, Luz, PA. JOHN was the eighth child of DAVID T.(X) JONES and ANN THOMAS. BLANCH and JOHN CHILDREN: LORINDA ERMINA, Fred Ellsworth, John Franklin JR. and Russell Paul. LORINDA ERMINA JONES was married 21 April 1921 to EDMUND WILLIAM KEMPSELL. |
