| Paul Edward Burge was born on July 4, 1947 in Filbert, W.Va., to George E. and Helen M. Burge. He attended Elbert-Filbert Elementary School and then Gary Jr. High and Gary High School before the family moved to Morganton, North Carolina in November of 1963. There, Paul attended Oak Hill High School, graduating in 1965. In May of 1966, he entered the USAF and took basic training at Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, Texas. After basic, he was stationed at Rantoul, Illinois' Chanute AFB, where he served as an Air Policeman. In January 1967, he transferred to Clark AB, Republic of the Philippines where he was stationed until July of 1969. During his stay at Clark, he met and married Wendy Diane Malloy, daughter of Ross and Brenda Wood Malloy. Wendy's parents were also stationed at Clark assigned to the American Red Cross. Paul transferred to Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls, Montana in August 1969. Their first child Jody Lynn Burge was born in Great Falls, Montana on November 14, 1969. Paul was discharged from the USAF in March of 1970. Paul and family returned to North Carolina where he lived and attended school. While living in Hickory, North Carolina, their second child, Ross Malloy Burge was born on September 21, 1971. Shortly thereafter, Paul and family moved to Phoenix, Arizona where they lived and worked until 1978 when they returned to North Carolina. After his divorce in 1980, Paul obtained custody of his two chilren in 1982,and then attended Gardner-Webb University, attaining a BS in Human Services in 1983. While attending GW, Paul was employed with the Burke County Department of Social Services as an Eligibility Specialist for Public Assistance Programs. He transferred to the McDowell County Department of Social Services in 1983 as Supervisor of Income Maintenance Programs. In December 1986, he became the Director of the Yancey County Department of Social Services, serving there for 12 years until 1998 when in July of that year he assumed the Directorship of the Burke County Department of Social Services,where he currently serves in that capacity. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
