THE BURGE CHAIN
This page is dedicated to the memory of Bud Tumy for his tireless work in researching the Burge family.  Also, thank you to Marvin Burge, Diane Burge Fogelman, my brother J.D. Burge and to my son Ross Burge for his technical assistance in building this page.  It goes without saying that we also dedicate this page to the memory of all the Burge's who preceded us and contributed to this chain.  We will trace our lineage from Thomas & Mary Burge through their son Alexander.

Thomas Burge, born about 1675 and his wife Mary settled in Bristol Township Virginia, the area now known as Petersburg, Virginia sometime in the early 1700's.  They had seventeen children:  John, Richard, William, Thomas, Elizabeth, Mary, Lucy, Martha, Pricilla, James, Nathaniel, Amey, Frederick, Woode, Alexander, and Sarah.

Alexander Burge was born on June 6, 1746 according to the Bristol Parish Register, in Prince George County, Virginia and died in 1812 in Stokes County, North Carolina.  He married Mary Elizabeth Burge sometime around 1773/74..  They had six children: Drury, Lucy, Susannah, James A., Elisabeth Ann, and Woody Burge.

Drury Burge was born about 1794 in Stokes County, North Carolina and died on March 28, 1868 in Hamilton, Ohio.  Drury married  Mary (Polly) Shelton on October 4, 1822 in Stokes County.  She was born in 1805 in North Carolina.  Drury and Mary had the following children: John W., Nathaniel,  Polly, George Martin, William, Davis, James, Betsey, Jane, Ginny, and Nancy.

George Martin Burge was born in 1834 in Virginia. He married Margaret Burge and she was born about 1837 in Virginia.  George and Margaret had the following children: Mary E., Louisa Jane, John Robert, William G., Edward, James, and Drury E.  George Martin and Margaret and their children with the exception of John Robert left Virginia and went to Nebraska to homestead when that area had land grants available to anyone who would settle there.  They sent money back to Virginia for John Robert to come out to Nebraska, however, he took the money and got married and remained in Virginia.  This is somewhat of a missing link in our family as we have no further information on George Martin and the rest of the family who moved west.

John Robert Burge was born on December 10, 1858 in Smyth County, Virginia and died on April 29, 1918 in Burkes Garden, Virginia.  He was married twice.  He married Moriah Ellen Kitts, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Elizabeth Bales Kitts on November 30, 1882.  Ellen was born on February 28, 1865 in Virginia, and died December 27, 1897 in Virginia.  He married Virginia Lampert in 1901. She was born December 15, 1883 in Virginia and died December 21, 1961 in Bluefield, Virginia.  John Robert and Ellen, had five chldren:  William Preston, Ollie M., George Monroe, Linden S.and Margaret.
John Robert and Virginia had six (6) children: Oscar Maiden, Ruth Annis, Ruby Grace, John Henry (Paul), Lillian Virginia and Marguerite.

From this point, we will show photographs of as many decendants of John Robert and his wives as we have been able to gather and give pertinent information on them as we have it. If anyone has further information or sees any errors, please let us know.
