My original plans for this trip called for me to head north out of Raton into Colorado

(the Colorado border is only about 8 miles away from Raton), straight up through

Colorado, passing through Colorado Springs and Denver, and further north into

Wyoming.  I decided to modify my route and head east, so that I could drive through

Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.  I had been in these states on a road trip which I took in

November 1996, but not in the western parts of them.  I left Raton and drove toward

Clayton.  I watched the sun rise as I approached Clayton, a town which I could see

many miles in advance thanks to the flat land and straight highway.  Ten miles later I
found myself in the panhandle of

Texas.  The scenery didn't change

much for the rest of the day - flat land

as far as the eye could see in any

direction.  I drove to Dalhart, and then

headed northeast on Route 54 - from

the panhandle of Texas to the

panhandle of Oklahoma.  I drove just

56 miles in Oklahoma before I made it
I spotted this billboard on Route 87 near Texline, TX.  If you read the fine print carefully, this billboard reads "Free 72 oz. Steak Dinner If Eaten In 1 Hour."  It definitely grabs your attention!  The restaurant making this offer is "The Big Texan" in Amarillo.
into Kansas, entering the Sunflower State near Liberal.  Liberal is the home to

"Dorothy's House," a museum which houses memorabilia from "The Wizard Of Oz."

Day 13 continued to go on without much in the way of excitement, as I headed north

on Route 83, passing through towns such as Garden City, Scott City and Oakley.

From Oakley, I drove west on I-70 for about an hour, and exited at Goodland, where I

headed north on Route 27 into Nebraska.  I didn't see much of Nebraska, though,

since I only drove through an 8-mile stretch in the southwestern part of the state before

entering Colorado again.  Route 34 in Colorado took me through Fort Morgan and into

Greeley.  In Greeley, I turned north onto Route 85, which brought me into Wyoming.

I drove through the city of Cheyenne before getting onto the Interstate (I-25), and

driving another hour to get to Wheatland, where I would stop for the night.
