Research Notes (Husband)
Anthony ROACH, a farmer and a lumberman, was living on the land originally granted to his family. In 1861, he was the head of a large catholic household. In addition to 7 servants, lumbermen and lodgers, 11 family members were staying under his roof, including his wife and children, his mother, brothers and stepbrothers.
10 years later, there was no servant or lodger living there any longer. Anthony and Mary had two more children and seemed to have lost another two. Anthony’s mother, along with his brothers and stepbrothers were living next door.
On April, 15th 1872, Anthony was appointed Justice of Peace.
When Anthony and Mary started aging, their first-born son William took the farm over and they remained on premises until they died. They lost another daughter due to childbirth.
During the last five years of her life, Mary O’Mara was stranded to bed, taken care of by her daughter in law Margaret, and frequently visited by her daughter Ellen. Her many nieces were living in the United States. Although she died during the peak time of the haying season, 30 carriages –neighbors and friends- showed up at her funeral at Chapel Point.
