July 2001 Volume 2, Number 3 Lauranne covers the WIW Rendevous ============= |
Beating the High Cost of Fuel on Two Wheels (From the AMA Website) The average motorcycle will usually get better gas mileage than the average car, and will be a heck of a lot more fuel efficient than a SUV. Even though some of today's most fuel-efficient cars may top the gas mileage of perhaps the worst gas hogs in the two-wheeled realm, they usually sacrifice any semblance of performance. Generally, an average scooter can still beat the most fuel-efficient car in the mpg category. Consider the numbers. On the small end of the scale, some 80cc four-stroke scooters can get between 85-90 mpg. Yet they still can reach 45mph, which is fine for inner-city and small-town commuting. Moving up a notch, many motorcycles with engine displacements between 250cc and 1,200cc, have been known to achieve anywhere between 45-70 mpg. Even sport bikes pushing the top end of the displacement scale will often achieve fuel mileage superior to many four-wheeled vehicles. Part of the reason for such thrifty fuel usage is their inherent aerodynamic design and low weight, which helps mileage figures top 35 mpg. And, they're a whole lot more fun to use than economy cars. Big-engine cruisers, with engine displacements equal to, or greater than, some cars, are often the least economical in fuel mileage among motorcycles, but many still eke out an average of just over 30 miles to the gallon. · · · · · It's Time to Ride to Work
