Canterbury built by Yarrow, UK., and completed in 1971. Canterbury is
doubled entered being the last of class to decommission. Both are
the broad-beamed versions of this class.

Project Protector
This contract was signed at the end of July 2004, with Tenix Defence Pty Limited
for the provision of seven new ships for the Royal New Zealand Navy.
Under the NZ$500 million project, the Royal New Zealand Navy will receive
one multi-role vessel (MRV), two offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) and
four inshore patrol vessels (IPVs).

Visiting homeport of Lyttleton on 28/6/07.
Timaru visit 4-6/7/07 thence to Devonport.
This MRV is a RO-RO type ship as currently used on the Irish Sea. It will
replace the Canterbury (I), already decommissioned and will be a long-range, high
endurance patrol vessel with capacity for tactical sealift and logistic support.
The ship will be capable of providing support to peacekeeping missions,
sealift, disaster relief, civil aid and evacuation and training operations. It
has been built at the Merwede Shipyard in the Netherlands and has been
fitted-out at Williamstown, Victoria. (Australia)

These OPVs are of similar design to the Irish Navy's OPVs, L.E. Roisin &
L.E. Niamh. They will be helicopter capable and will provide the RNZN with a

Both OPVs are being constructed at Williamstown, Victoria from modules built at
both Williamstown and Whangarei.

These IPVs are similar in design to a Tenix designed S&R vessel in service
with the Phillipines Coast Guard. They will replace the existing Weka Class IPCs.
