About Me

Work

I'm excited and proud to be a Sr. Software Engineer Staff Engineer / ESM Architect with WalMart.com. I am on the Enterprise Systems Management team responsible for the tools and infrastructure used by the Site Operations and Engineering departments, for the day-to-day operation of the Walmart.com Web site. I'm responsible for working with internal customers to understand their business requirements, and specifying, building and implementing the required products and solutions. I monitor and analyze production database platforms, UNIX servers, IP networks and mission-critical systems. I script, code and work with TCP/IP based protocols. Nicky and I have moved to the S.F. Bay area. We're very happy and thankful for this wonderful opportunity. Prior to this I was an ESM resource for IBM® Global Services. My toolkit includes Netcool® OMNIbus®; NerveCenter; Network Node Manager; OpenView Operations and CiscoWorks. Most all of my programming is done in Perl on UNIX these days. I hold NerveCenter, OpenView (AIS & ASE) and ISO 9001 certifications. I'm currently mastering ProactiveNet and BladeLogic.

Background

I have a degree in Computer Science (2000) from Indiana University. It succeeds my other interests, philosophy and belief systems, which materialized itself as a degree in Religious Studies from the same institution in 1992. Outside interests include music, for which I have a deep appreciation for the piano and saxophone. I was born in Brazil Indiana and grew up in Indianapolis. I graduated from Southport High School in 1985 where I was in a variety of bands and participated in countless competitions.

I have worked on the campus of Indiana University for eleven years as a manager in their residence hall system prior to coming to California in February, 2001. I have worked for five years as a Lead Systems Engineer in IT at Gap Inc., an iconic specialty retailer and great place to work. I am the proud father of six terrific kids, five of whom were adopted internationally from Haiti. They currently reside in Georgia, as does my ex-wife.

Personal Characteristics

My personal appearance is like that of both Kiefer Southerland (60%) and Tom Hanks (40%). I love cats & dogs; reading; and shopping for antiques, like my vintage 1915 Edison Amberola 30. I like listening to music and record collecting too. The literary arts from both fiction and non-fiction sources (historical or contemporary) have always made me pause to take notice. I like to read and collect books -- in addition to texts in electronic format. I have a passion for driving classic cars; cosmology; tinkering with things, like 8-bit computers; watch collecting; meeting new people, especially from different cultures; learning new technologies; and hanging out with family. I value things that are well organized, clean and simple. I strive to live for the moment, while continually looking forward.

C= VIC-20

No introduction to me would be complete without talking about the Commodore VIC-20. This little machine has been part of my life since 1982. I mention it because it helped me define where my interests are in life (at a very early age) and paved the way towards a rewarding career that is not only my job, but a fun hobby too. I've had the opportunity to meet a lot of fascinating people surrounding that computer. Special greetings go out to Ward Shake, Marko Makela (Veni vidi Vic!), Earl at RetroBits for your podcast, and the entire Commodore community.

Greetings

I've had the fortune to meet a lot of great people enriched my life in many significant ways. Special thanks to Bosco Sitati; Anne Coyne; Jun Luo; Thuan Le; Buddy Sudijanto; Tim Yang; Mark Kindred; Pat West; Sandy Tabarangao; Robert Donaldson; Jackie Soares; Cindy Wolf; Dereck Green and my life partner, Nicky Reyes.
