The Wallace Stevens Tribute Page

"The ordinary, Wallace Stevens believed, is always what one makes of it, and Stevens' poetic energy was released in his response to an ordinary world. What matters is what the artist adds to life in living it, in bringing to it the fullness of his response, and the inventions that this response includes." -- From the Introduction to Robert Pack's "Wallace Stevens: An Approach to His Poetry and Thought."

THE CURTAINS IN THE HOUSE
OF THE METAPHYSICIAN

It comes about that the drifting of these curtains
Is full of long motions, as the ponderous
Deflections of distance; or as clouds
Inseparable from their afternoons;
Or the changing of light, the dropping
Of the silence, wide sleep and solitude
Of night, at which all motion
Is beyond us, as the firmament,
Up-rising and down-falling, bares
The last largeness, bold to see.
