Theobald Smegwich

From the Archives of the Robert James DeBurgh (Poet) Appreciation Society

Below is an extract from the Scunthorpe Star, birthplace of Theobald Smegwich, regarding an unfortunate occurrence during the latter days of his life.

INCIDENT AT NOVGORODNY

Slovotkin Institute Under Investigation

Police were called to deal with an incident in the town of Novgorodny yesterday, after one of the inmates broke out of the Asylum.

Theobald A.V. Smegwich, Anarchist, Poet, Obsessive hater of Boris Svertlovich, having been on the run from the Slovotkin Institute Asylum, was re-captured by police and a contingent of The Red Army Choir.

Smegwich at first put up a stubborn resistance to his re-capture, but eventually, lulled in to a stupor by the Red Army Choirs tragic rendition of The Song Of The Volga Boatmen, Smegwich burst into tears, surrendered and asked to be returned to The Slovotkin.

The Red Army Choir, continuing with Babushka! Babushka! and a selection from The Student Prince followed the police vehicles until they were threatened with castration by the police, whereupon all 500 of them diverted in to a nearby Tavern which promptly burst itself asunder under the sheer force of bodies shoving in through the door.

Smegwich, upon arriving back at The Slovotkin, was seen to have a grin of outstanding sillyness. On being questioned by the doctors

he would give no reply except to mumble unclearly something that sounded like Death to Svertlovich. Electroconvulsive therapy applied later only succeeded in him placing more emphasis than before on the Svert of Svertlovich.

Your reporter telephoned the Ministry of Poetry in an attempt to gain an interview with Boris Svertlovich, but we were only referred the Ministry of Fishing, Chickens, and Beetroot, who had nothing to say on the matter.
