Endemic Heliconias
These are some pictures of the endemic heliconias found in the Morne Trois Piton National Park on the Laudat- Grand Fond Trail. The following pictures were taken while on a hike with the DGS Adventure Club.
Did you know that contrary to popular belief the heliconias flowers are not red but actually yellow. These greenish yellow flowers are actually very small and can be found in the pocket-like red structures that make up the heliconia. On Dominica the heliconia is known as the Balizie (accent on the e) in the local French Creole. The smaller yellow heliconias you may notice around the island are not endemic to the island.
