KATAS

The information below is from the Sodokan Goju-Ryu website.  Their katas may not be identical to ours, but I thought the information presented was worth reading.  (All links will open in a new window)

Roots of Sanchin

"Sanchin kata is the cornerstone of a number schools such as Goju Ryu and Uechi Ryu having been taken to Okinawa from Fukien province in South China. It is widely held that this form embodies the essence of karate and that without a profound understanding of this, the higher levels will not be perceived." more

Three conflicts of Sanchin kata

"Sanchin kata contains the essence of Karate as do all kata, however it's primary function is to develop the cutting mind, the body of armour and the explosive power." more

Commentary on Saifa kata

"Whilst Saifa is one of the traditional Goju Ryu kata it is performed in many different ways. The structure and sequences are usually the same but there differences in speed, force, height and individual interpretation. There is no one right way of performing or using this kata. Kata should not be changed, but it does evolve through awareness and perception. If the original principles are still contained within the physical movements then it holds true to the Goju Ryu teaching." more

Commentary on Seiunchin kata

"The form Seiunchin (also written as Seiyunchin) is a very popular Goju kata due to its flowing moves and atheistic appearance.  It contrasts well with other kata that are predominantly kick, punch forms and are harder." more
