Exclusive interview with Hasan Salihamidzic

While the Bayern squad was on route to Prague for a Champions League game, Hasan Salihamidzic was training at the club's Sbener Strae headquarters after sustaining a torn meniscus in his right knee. In an exclusive interview with the Bayern Munich Online Team, 'Brazzo' tells us when he'll be fit again, what he thinks of Sebastian Deisler and why he's so grateful to his girlfriend.

Hasan, can you give us an update on your fitness? Will you be available for the league match against SV Hamburg on Saturday?
Hasan Salihamidzic: I've trained well over the past few days, so I'm feeling pretty good. If there are no further complications, I hope to play against Hamburg.

The list of injured players at the club is not getting any shorter, but the team is still coming up with great results.
Salihamidzic: That's right, we're having a great run at the moment. Our system is based on working as a collective. We all help each other and we're really enjoying our football, even in training. We've gelled well as a team and I think you can see that when we play.

You seem to be enjoying your football more than most and your form has improved steadily over the past few weeks. How do you explain that?
Salihamidzic: I think we're all playing well at the moment. We have a great team spirit and that helps to lift everyone's game. It's as simple as that.

After the poor start to the season, when you lost 1-0 to Borussia Mnchengladbach, many people were suggesting that the team had become complacent after the success of last season. Where do you find your motivation?
Salihamidzic: We have enough experience to know that matches don't win themselves that the contribution of every team player is crucial. We also keep reminding ourselves how hard we had to work for our achievements in the Champions League. It's that level of commitment that we want to keep this season.

Your coach, Ottmar Hitzfeld, has played you in virtually every position. If you were the coach, where would you play Hasan Salihamidzic?
Salihamidzic: I have been playing in midfield since I was a kid. I think I would simply put myself in the position that was most valuable to the team.

We now know that Sebastian Deisler will play for Bayern Munich from next season. How do you feel about the transfer?
Salihamidzic: I'm looking forward to playing with Sebastian. Everyone's aware of his qualities as a footballer and I'm sure he has an important contribution to make. To be honest, though, it's not something the players talk about a great deal.

Going back to you, you always seems to be in high spirits. Is there also a more pensive, more serious side to your character?
Salihamidzic: I do have a serious side, of course, but I'm generally in a good mood. Away from football, I have a family and the same kind of life with all its ups and downs as everyone else.

Your first child, a daughter, was born in January. Have there been many sleepless nights since then?
Salihamidzic: I have to say a big thank you to my girlfriend in this respect. I do change nappies, of course, and get up sometimes during the night, but she handles most of the childcare. In my profession, it's particularly important to get sufficient sleep if you want to be at the top of your game.
